SOIL RESPIRATION: MACROSCALE Heterogeneity AND RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE
Soil respiration (Rs), the production of carbon dioxide from the soil when plant roots, microbes and fauna respire, is the second largest component of terrestrial-atmosphere carbon exchange; however, Rs remains the least well understood component of the ecosystem carbon cycle. Numerous studies have examined Rs at field scales and at global scales; however, very limited research has examined Rs dynamics at macroscales (regional to continental), where distinct patterns in ecological systems may emerge.
This research (led by PhD student Jinshi Jian) examines these macroscale patterns using a new global scale, monthly time step database (MGRsD).

INFORMATION
The MGRsD is a database of collected soil respiration measurements from published studies at a global scale. The time interval of soil respiration data is monthly. Only publications that reported monthly, daily or diurnal soil respiration were included in this database. Publications that only reported yearly or seasonal soil respiration were excluded from this database. Detailed methods on the database construction and distribution will be found in an upcoming publication which will be added to this site. We make this database publicly available to serve as a resource for scientific analysis.
There are four files in the database
Table1: MGRsD, which holds a global monthly interval soil respiration and together with other 38 other ancillary measurements.
Tables 2: Description of database fields included for the MGRsD database’s main data file (Table 1).
Tables 3: Publication list digitized to generate MGRsD.
Table 4: Climate and soil data sources for ancillary data added into MGRsD.

How to contribute
We tried our best to collect as much publication as possible, but MGRsD still does not contain many sites at South hemisphere and Russia. There are a number of publications in the Russian literature not currently in MGRsD database. We also assume there are many publications in French, Spanish and Portuguese, those data may cover study areas at south hemisphere, where our MGRsD has limited samples. If you find any soil respiration related publications which reported monthly, daily or diurnal soil respiration, and not collected by MGRsD, it would be great if you can share with us. You can send it to: [email protected] or [email protected]
